Once I see her father's design, I can finally die happy. Whenever that happens. I am IN LOVE with these concept pieces... and the 'justice stick'.kurisu: What I meant was that she was going to at least have a semi-active role in the game but is not just sheer eyecandy. That era was at least close to Lara Croft. Yes, she could hold her own too, but just... irritated some of the female players. Tiara is cute, no doubts about that, but she seemed to be rather independant while not being a tramp. Amy -was- seeming to go that direction, but now Rouge is being mangled into that role instead x_x you cannot HAVE a chest and still be a respected game character these days! So is it bandicoot, manx or manicoot? IP: 12.226.76.67 |

I'm a girl and I'm a fan of Tiara I became a fan of hers loooong back when I first saw her black and white art printed in a magazine as a bratty little 9/10 year old at the peak of my Sonic obsession. I used to even play make-believe using her, except since I didn't know her name at the time and called her Judy XD Heh. Good ol days. Knowing more about her and Gazebo has been something of a holy grail of mine ever since. I remember avidly waiting for Xtreme's arrival and wondering why it hadn't been released yet two/three years after first hearing about it. I was a sad little fangirl when I realized it had been canned. Those pictures are amazing! It makes me feel inspired to draw her ^_^ So much more than I could have hoped to have seen. If you showed Gazebo I think my heart would explode. Can you imagin the mess that would make? I have another question... Does Tiara and Gazebo's names have any specific meaning? With the majority of characters in the Sonic universe their names have some sort of direct relation to their abilities or appearance. Sonic is fast, Knuckles has spiked knuckles, Tails has two tails, Eggman is egg-shaped, etc. etc... I noticed on the myspace page that you listed Tiara's occupation as "princess". Now I realize this is probably just a token of the kind of attitude she has, but it's the only connection I can think of. Gazebo I can only imagin (scary place, my imagination) XD [edited January 07, 2006 by Jamie Lee] IP: 66.38.27.161 |

SANiK - lol - hey man, don't look at me! *I* don't have access to Tiara's stuff! If she knew I had access, she'd probably Hover my butt over a ravine! BTW, she told me to tell you thanks a bunch for that techno jargon you sent her. RE: the personal myspace request... normally I would say "yeah sure woohoo!" but at present I'm just barely keeping in touch with the few friends I have on there now. Since so much of my time is now here, would it be okay if we communicated this way for now?AngstOverlord - lol ...I'll be sure not to share them then... don't want you dyin' on us! j/k... about the not sharing part! I gotcha with the respect et al... word. Adamis - Right on (or should I say "Write on!"? ) Keep up the cool work... and share that shiznit, homey! Keith - Don't mind Frank, he was just being me. Or something. (too much sugar). lol with the fight... can you imagine Amy vs. Tiara live at the OCTAGON??? ROFLMAO - that would make such a classic short film (and fight ) Jamie Lee - Hi Jamie Lee, welcome and thanks for sharing that very entertaining account! That's so neat to know you played make-believe with her... did you know I played with toys until I was FIFTEEN?! I know, weird, but dang... all that toy-playing and gameplaying and drawing... that's what developed my imagination. I remember when my parents would get on my case about playing games... then years later laughing about it when I had a good job in the videogame industry. Well, we certainly don't want anyone dying or their hearts exploding, but I hear rumors that Professor Gazebo Boobowski will be making an appearance sometime soon... RE: your good question about name significance... "Tiara" is the name I think Michael Kosaka thought of way back when she was first being explored as an idea for a new character. I added Gazebo and the last name elements later on... and they were simply names that seemed to fit. But, we could use our imagination and suggest that Tiara fits because she is indeed a princess with class (except when she's rolling in the dirt) and Gazebo, well, you'll have to see him, but trust me, the name FITS!!! lol [edited January 07, 2006 by kurisu] IP: 24.126.160.81 |

Repacked Crackers... Chaotix?I always thought Crackers was real... most of the sprite animators in the community (especially then) would've had a hard time making such adorable animations. Spin, you little spike-impaled freak! BWAA HAA HAA! ... Well, most of the ones I knew couldn't animate themselves out of a paper BAG. When I was little, I was angry that the guys would never let me join in their stupid Sonic and Tails pretend games. "Can't I be Tails' sister or something?". Granted this was before Sonic CD and Amy... then years later I won first in a Sonic 3 versus competition. Oh, the bruised egos... The series -really- needed a decent female back then. Now we have Blaze, the dead Tikal and Amy the less-of-a-drip. I always had a softer spot for SatAM's Sally though. She was actually a semi-realistic female. I have followed Sonic X-Treme since it was announced, gawd it really was ten years ago, (I've been following Sonic for 14 years now) but I never thought the release of Tiara B's colour and species could make me so happy. but it really, really did. thank you for lessening my pain. Megaman told me Dr. Wily was busy, so I created a monster... Professor Gazebo Boobowski. (bah - perfect place for one but have to scan at work!). New question: What color is the staffOh, and is there any description as to how her moves in the game would've been like? And to the previous commenter who will have to quote... XD I happen to like Mina a lot (I find it very interesting how her shortened name is also that of a Mynah bird and her lengthened name a godess of wisdom Greek or Roman I dunno) and she's a wise charachter who sings. She's not gonna be everyone's cup of tea though so yeah, I don't wanna stray off topic. So tying it back, I guess the whole bit about Mina Mongoose being a music star and Tiara on a similar path caught me for a moment. There are probably more similarities between Tiara Mina and Sally.. and when you think about it, those similarities happen to tell us a great deal about what the creatives feel are necessary in someone Sonic's going to be interested in [edited January 08, 2006 by Miko] IP: 4.249.24.194 |

PineappleEveryone seems to be asking the questions I wanna ask, but I do have one, the very first colour concepts you posted [at the beginnig of this here board] appear to have been drawn on a PC [correct?] yet all the other images are hand drawn, as the hand drawings are so competent (or bloody good) [and arguably quicker to do] why use a PC? I mean if it's your preference dont' take this as a jibe [that's anyone] but I just wondered if it was for a specific reason [colour scheme swapping etc] or if you were told to do it by Sega. it's not really that important, i just wondered (and I wanted to make the post a bit longer than um...pineapple) cheers MeX

This is just a guess, but sprites are easier to erase and redraw... with the added benefit of quick color changing.Granted what I usually do is scan a drawing in high-res, fix the lines and flat-fill. But yes, easy manipulation I think. That and they just look spiffy... I wonder along what timeline the most common Tiara concept was made? You know, the one published so many places back then... Bear in mind this was ten years ago on an Amiga with (likely) Deluxe Paint. What we do now with Photoshop was only a twinkle in the graphics artists eye. I used Deluxe Paint for several years on my old 386 and I can tell you it was a very primitive program by modern standards. Our high-res nowadays would be several screens worth of 600x400 imagery and more memory than the computer could handle Although I bet he had access to graphics-specific computers, I think I can safely say that those pics he posted would have taken up most of the screen, if not the entire screen. Miko - Staff color? I tell you what, I will do a colored version because I don't think the staff was ever colored. I'll take one of the black and white versions or simply draw a new one with it... how does that sound? Tiara moves? SXC will explain... Good observation about analyzing similarities in different characters to see what the creators are thinking.Tiara sayings used when? Excellent question. Her blogs are a good place to learn more about her, what's going on in her life and I'm sure she'll let those phrases slip here and there... thebeast - What's up, MeX?! No problemo... and Pineapple, huh? Okeedokee. Now to your q's... First color concepts were indeed directly on the computer (and back then, and throughout Sonic, everything I did was done with a MOUSE baby, yeah!). Thanks for the compliments... yes, hand-drawn compared to mouse drawing was/is indeed easier and faster... but as AngstOverlord mentions, coloring is much faster and more flexible as is image manipulation if it's necessary (shortening a leg, rotating an arm or simply redrawing it). Nowadays, I draw with a stylus pen which isn't the same as drawing on paper, but it's close enough. As I mentioned to Miko, I'll draw a new Tiara pic with the stylus and you can compare line quality, etc. Sound good? At the time, I chose to draw with the mouse and color it because it was easier overall. Keep in mind that all that drawing was done with DeluxePaint Animator... 8-bit artwork with no alpha, no layers and gigantic pixels... lol about the "longer than pineapple" comment! AngstOverlord - Your method is very similar to what I do. First I draw it (whether on paper or directly into Photoshop), scan if necessary, then select the negative space around the character, then invert the selection, decrease its size by 1 or 2 pixels then fill the whole thing with a color. Then I break down that sillhoette by coloring its parts to ultimately be a fully-colored flat fill drawing... then I add highlight and shadow layers, accent layers, and background layers 'til I'm done. Timeline of the final Tiara concept pic? Good question... I think it was late '95 to mid '96... which would put us into v08 or Saturn target range. Jan - Hey you - I'm glad you like the other pics of Tiara. What is it do you think that makes these more appealing than the final to you? I'm glad you're inspired to draw... I've been drawing ever since I was a little squirt and improvement came from being inspired... so I'm really glad you are! Keep it up, Jan! Keith - YOU WIN!!! IP: 24.126.160.81 |

I had to think about this a bit lol. But what it is, is that the Tiara concepts give her more of a cute but confident look, rather than the more sexy look that the final gave her. I usually prefer cuter looks for female characters, but I can understand why that final drawing may have chosen, given the target audience of most games I've also been drawing since I was little. *waves* Hellos. Been reading over this topic now [ among other topics located here on the board ], and it's really nice to see some life being brought back into a character that had Sonic fans shrouded in mystery for years.Though I lacked knowledge of Tiara, I've been a big fan of hers since I picked up a magazine and saw her colourless piccie. I was forever curious about her, and what had occured to make Sonic Xtreme — what appeared to be an awesome game — cease to exist. Really interesting to see more Tiara pics - and in colour no less! I'm sure you know this by now, but most of the Sonic fanbase thought she was a hedgehog. I was one of those people, only because I was lead to believe this. XD Heck, I've drawn fan pics of her like crazy - all lame hedgie ideas, way off from the real deal [ especially in colour, but everyone sees things differently, right?]. So thank you for clarifying, and sharing with all of us the real Tiara. I must say - the pics you've posted are noticably different from the one pic everyone knew. She looks... cuter. Was she meant to be cute, or smexy? ;P Thanks for taking the time to read my lame post. XD IP: 68.107.130.165 |

I wouldn't be too quick to pass that kind of judgement. Only one of the three characters you're comparing made their way into an actual release. If I were expanding on a cast for a videogame series, I certainly wouldn't take worry about crossing design space for characters that aren't even official! quote: Originally posted by Miko: For some reason, its so interesting how many similarities she has to Mina Mongoose and Sally Acorn.
To me, not so much. The way I see it, this is occuring because of a lack of courage in character design. (no offense kurisu) The collective traits of Sally, Tiara, and Mina could be a compilation of generic and subtle stereotypes that you wouldn't normally apply to male characters, as well as an unwillingness to dip into more exciting colors besides brown or yellow. I wouldn't in any way consider those some sort of groundbreaking parallels or insight to what Sonic's ideal partner would be. To be honest, though, I much prefer Tiara over Mina and Sally. She is much more appropriate for the nature of the world of Sonic, -especially- back in the days when Sonic Xtreme was a work in progress. She at least has spunk and style, and now, her scepter communicates her state of royalty as well as some original abilities. [edited January 11, 2006 by egg] IP: 69.203.7.110 |

First on the agenda - address comments and questions...hxc - Funky it is! lol Jan - I completely agree with you, Jan - good observations. I prefer the cuter one, too. The final one lacks life like the earlier pics. I hear tell that Tiara updated her myspace page - you might wanna check on the answer to your question there... thebeast - lol Classic, MeX! You're very welcome SANiK got it covered by not only posting Tiara's myspace link, but posting AS Tiara. lol Cherri - Hello Cherri and welcome! Thanks for introducing yourself - and it wasn't lame. (sistuh PLEASE!) Hmm, I wasn't aware that she was seen as a hedgehog by more than a few who thought about it... interesting. Good point about the cuter... she was ultimately set to be more "smexy" (I like that term lol), but as Jan mentioned, we like the cuter version egg - Well hello there, egg. Shoot first and introduce yourself later, huh? lol It's good to have such varied personalities to share with. I'm glad you feel comfortable being blunt. I'll return the favor... no offense taken with the "lack of courage in character design" statement. My reasoning behind what I designed was simple: I thought it looked good and spoke out as a tangible character to me more than any of my other designs. Similarly, there really wasn't an "unwillingness to dip into more exciting colors" with me... color has always been my weakest skill in art, and those colors I decided on were what I found appealing. Call me "not so creative" or "not so skilled with color" and I'm fine with that. Speculating is fine, but assuming, well, it would be nice to be asked, rather than told what only I know... know what I mean, jelly bean? I'm glad she evokes a feeling of spunk and royalty - that was the intent SANiK - "it's only one Tiara running around"... are you sure about that, toughguy? lol Honestly, that is a funny prank... I would just be concerned that some people might use that power (if they figure it out or find out how to do it) for ill... some damage could be done with that... use your imagination if nothing comes to mind at first... LocalH - Good points. I'm not sure whether it was III or IV I last used - think the latter, but it was indeed superior to the PC version. I loved my Amiga... it still works, but the fan is so loud I think it's going to erupt into a thermo-nuclear explosion any minute! Keith - Thanks for the pineapple pic compliments. Yeah, well, nothin' like a few GINORMOUS pineapples to sweeten up the day, huh? I did have access to better graphic machines and sofware - but the funny thing (well, maybe not funny) was that I chose to stick to what I knew because it was comfortable... Looks more like some sort of armor, to me. Could be something her dad made, methinks.Being an avid fan of medieval strategy RPG's (think Shining Force, Fire Emblem), I just can't help imagine her holding a large spear or halberd in that armor. XD "Oh! I am SO not wearing the helmet! I spent HOURS getting my hair the way it is!" Lovely sketches, there. Some of those really give a great look on some of the finer aspects of her personality, if you ask me - despite being royalty, and part of a band, it's good to see she still doesn't figure herself above such activities as being fascinated by wild (robot)life and reading books. =P [edited January 14, 2006 by H Hog] IP: 62.194.17.202 |

Adamis - it looks like he was just "shooting" for ideas by drawing random stuff*bursts Adamis' bubble of having a 'Terminator' named Tiara* ;P kurisu - I understand the chaos that the Tiara thing can cause, but there's a way to 'protect' oneself: A) Disable HTML (too risky) - OR - B) Whenever a comment is posted, click "Edit Comments" instead of "View Profile" For example, look at MY comment above Tiara's comment... It should be missing the "Delete comment", but Tiara's comment would have the "Delete comment" option which should be a hint to how fake it is Although, I did pull some funny pranks with it like having Tom of MySpace comment my friends GOD, did they think they were so cool because of that =P I still haven't told them it was me ^_^ *whistles on* [edited January 14, 2006 by SANiK] IP: 71.250.112.130 |
