Re: Sonic Xtreme: in 3D by Jeffrey Bones

So I never got a chance to release that Christmas demo of Sonic collecting presents. I have been on break from Sonic Xtreme GM8 working on a new project. Sonic Xtreme GM8 is not by any means dead, I just needed a change of pace the new project is using the Sonic Xtreme GM8 engine and I thought you guys might want to see it. You can still tell it was made off of sonic but here it is, and I dont intend to go off topic just thought you guys might want a look.

Yes looks very rad. ^^ I've never played much Donkey Kong Country, but it looks like you've done a good job replicating its style. ^^ Has the DK man had some kind of filtering applied to his texture though?: Looks a tad blurry to me. Otherwise awesome job. ^^

As I recall he looks like that on the original.

Yes actually I added more red to his palette and a thick black outline to his sprites to try and match him with the visual style of the background elements which are ripped from various different DK game (mostly DK Jungle Climber for Nintendo DS). I'm happy with the look so far.

SONIC XTREME GM8 MAJOR UPDATE/NAME CHANGE

SONIC XTREME: IN 3D   FORMALLY SONIC XTREME GM8

Ok folks so I have a major update to the game to talk about. Throughout the development of this project I have had major problems with an aspect of replicating the original Sonic Xtreme that those who have been following my project should know well enough by now. The damn fisheye lens. Lots of people want to see it, some want an option to turn it on or off but most say "If its gonna be a Sonic Xtreme Fangame you gotta do it" I Frankly don't want to do the damn thing, I'm not even a fan of the effect myself as I have expressed before. However, in attempting to replicate this effect I have stumbled onto something remarkable that has changed the future of the project altogether. (I will talk more about that in a second).

Winged Wolf the creator of the original engine I started off using has criticized this project several times to the point that he even said in one comment "What's the point anymore? AXSX is almost perfect and you're still using Game Maker and Game Maker is all sucky and bla bla bla..."
Although hurtful remarks by the original creator of the engine they were still useful remarks. Something had to give, I had to come up with something new for this project. I couldn't come up with squat! My hang Glider gimmick was the only thing unique about SXGM8 and that just wasn't enough. I took some time off from the project and started working on other things like Donkey Kong Land Returns to clear my mind and pick back up later with new ideas.

As many of you may have noticed, there has been a recent 3D craze. 3D TVS, Movies shot in 3D and even Nintendo 3DS. (By 3D just to clarify, I mean 3D pop out in your face stuff not 360 degree movement game engines or 3D models)

3D is not by any means a new technology however it IS a current fad being replicated in new and innovative ways. The new 3D TVS for example use a different type of "3D" and a different type of 3D glasses. (they are clear and work a bit different as opposed to the red/cyan 3D glasses from back in the day)

I also recently went to my friends house who owns C.O.D. Black OPS and a 3D TV (The game supports it) and was amazed at the in your face crap. A bit cheesy but still an awesome experience.

Now let's get back on topic here. In trying to do the fisheye lens I got to thinking, "would it be possible to do the game In Old School 3D? To have Sonic start off on platforms that seem to be reaching out of the screen and as he progresses through into the screen the depth factor goes way deep in?" Guess what? It is possible. I have made a script that turns "In 3D Mode" on or off so you will still be able to play the game normally. I discovered this by overlapping blue and Cyan replica sprites of my sonic HUD face and then re-positing them on screen overlapping the original sprite to the point where the HUD appeared to be popping out of the screen! I can do this with everything! Certain level object will appear to pop out of the screen while others will look faaaaar back.

As soon as I'm impressed enough and have something worth showing I will upload a new video "In 3D Mode" so those of you who own a pair of Red/Cyan 3D glasses may preview my version of Jade Gully "in 3D"

Now I must ask the forum admins to change the tittle of this topic from Sonic Xtreme GM8 into Sonic Xtreme: In 3D

Let me know what you guys think and stay tuned for 3D screenshots and 3D videos

Mr Winged Wolf the answer to your question "What's the point?" in regards to AXSX
The point sir, is MY version will be different unique in it's own way! In 3D BABY!!!!!!

Re: Sonic Xtreme: in 3D by Jeffrey Bones

Alright sounds ... ok, I can't even make this out in a word.
Ok, here we go again. Using overrated and overused (But popular nonetheless) gimmicks does not make your project unique.

I am sorry to burst your bubble, but even fangames like AXSX can already be played in 3d. How? Most videocards these days allow you to simply run most recent games in 3d without changing anything in the game's code. And yes, AXSX counts, because Andrew is using Unreal Engine 3 for it.
I am quite sure there's even software that allows you to do it without the proper videocard.

Your idea might work though... if you actually did it right.
Placing red and cyan versions of the hud and sprites side by side will NOT generate a 3d effect. I won't even touch on the 3d models here...
This technology only works if the red and cyan copies show the same image from a slightly different angle. This means you will have to build new sprites every time the camera moves. And as far as I know, GM is simply horrid for post processing effects. There are, however, some neat examples on the GMC forums where some guys managed to draw actual 3d images on top of eachother to get this effect, but it is Sloooooooow....

Look, just use something else. I know this hurts, but GM simply isn't good for 3d. I know I made the pretty much only truly playable third person action adventure game on GM (Haven't checked if it has changed, I don't think I care much either, but I might check it later), which may make you think this is possible and I know you hate my opinions or whatever, but I'm just trying to help.

Again, this post may sound agressive, but it is not, I hate to see you falling on stumps over and over, because you have a great potential, but you are wasting it by using the wrong tools.

Obviously GM might be able to handle that kind of stuff, but it will take years for you to get to that level of GM skill. Not because GM is so awesome, but because it sucks. You would have gotten both fisheye, and your 3d gimmick months ago already on both Unity3D or UDK (... Or if you used your own engine).

Good luck though.

Re: Sonic Xtreme: in 3D by Jeffrey Bones

I did some meddling in this a good time ago...  I had the code to make most game maker cameras be 3D, but it would always mess up the FOV.  Also, I found that although it was a fun gimmick when I made the short demo (I believe it was before 3D TV was a "big deal" *eyeroll* ) it is irritating to work with...  Good luck!

BAMP

Everytime I download the Sonic Xtreme demos my antivirus program, Norton, goes crazy ("there are many indicators that this file is not legitimate" is the reason given for both demos). Is this just my antivirus program being stupid or is there a legitimate threat in these files?
