Winged Wolf! Do you know how long I've been looking for you? You are hard to find. You are not on the yo yo forums anymore. Anyway the engine you created kicks ass. I have added things into it and I believe it is capable of much more. You should have never stopped working on this engine man! AND YES I GAVE YOU CREDIT and I will continue to do so. Anyway the engine is good. the problems you had with it I'm asuming were collision and speed issues. 3D mode in game maker uses direct draw. NOT open GL Not hardware accelerated, what this means is when you make your games you have to be clever with the codeing and reduce the amount of code being read in order to maintain stability. As for collisions well you just have to be clever about using masks and stuff. I have actually improved your engine in quite a few areas and am still tinkering with it. I promise I'm not just laying out a level using your work. You will see what I mean soon. Thank you for the engine by the way!

Re: Sonic Xtreme: in 3D by Jeffrey Bones

I do plan on releasing it as an engine too. That will happen after I release the game, but the engine will not contain all sonic xtreme stuff. I'm going to set the engine up with how-tos and tutorials to make any 3D platform game. For instance there will be sprite models for mario, (ripped mario sunshine) banjo and kazooie, pac man, Ms Pacman, Bomberman, Spyro and a few others ready to use with all animations in there and all code already set up for specific character moves. I wasn't going to announce that yet but whatever. Anyway It's going to be ready to use for anything.

WingedWolf; wasn't this also part of Dobermanns engine, or a design of your own.  I know I'm digging stuff up from 2 year, or so ago.

Dobermanns engine was created in Multimedia Fusion Version 1.5. Winged Wolf's Engine was made in Game Maker, so I don't think so.

Re: Sonic Xtreme: in 3D by Jeffrey Bones

Actually dobermann used to work with Game Maker and he indeed did make another Sonic Xtreme example. It was much better than mine though, hahaha.
I think this is the one he made: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZUDnAQzJmU .
Don't pay attention to what the poor kid is trying to tell us with "Lost Build 859!! ZOOOMG!!!", it's just a failed joke. tongue1
I think he made this one, too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSBhPcdu … re=related
They ware much better than my example back then, because they worked a LOT faster and they ware no where near as glitchy as mine was.
And before you ask - no, I don't know where to get these, in fact, I sort of doubt they're still available in the first place.
His website seems to be down and I doubt he even visits this forum anymore.

Back then. Not now, I have fixed the speed and collision issues. Your engine is superior.

It's not like it's an "Engine" anyway - Game Maker is the engine! big_smile1
You can pretty much say it's your work, if you have changed how everything works, actually. It's not like I drew the sprites and textures and composed the music anyway. tongue1

Re: Sonic Xtreme: in 3D by Jeffrey Bones

Yeah, I used to have the source to Dobermann's game engine.  It was actually really good, but it still lacked most of the features that made Sonic Xtreme, well..., Sonic Xtreme (fisheye, rotations etc.)

Re: Sonic Xtreme: in 3D by Jeffrey Bones

Adding the level rotation wouldn't really be that hard on gm, at all, actually.
You guys are using that Ultimate 3D directX/OpenGL/Whatever Wrapper-thingy for GM, right? big_smile1
Doing the same kind of fisheye on pure GM with decent framerate may be kinda hard, but it sure may be possible to do it with the 3D surface fix... Though then again, it would look like crap anyway, because it would stretch literally everything, even the 2d sprites, making them look flat.

Re: Sonic Xtreme: in 3D by Jeffrey Bones

Yeah we are using Ultimate3D which gives access to vertex shaders using Assembler.  These are essentially the lowest level of programming.  It literally changes the way the graphic card renders rather then using a trick to appear curved.

I remember someone using 4 planes to make a block, then applying a math formula to skew the planes to make a pretty good fisheye effect in GM.  I can't remember where I saw this before.

Before I was using Ult3D, Now this was WAY back in 2006, I was using a technique for level rotations, but I can't remember what it was, and that source code is long lost, and so are all the videos of it.  I had them all stored on a server which expired and all the stuff got deleted off it.  I think it involved rotating all the planes, and using a simple trig math formula to make sure they all stay locked together as they should.

Though I must say, I love the Sonic ghosting effect when he is running full speed.

Actually I think I know how to do the level rotations in GM. I think it can be done by a collision with an invisible object and then the cam changes its x and Y position. Then another collision and so on until you get a full rotation. I think that will work, anyway that's the way I'm going to try it.

As for the fisheye I'm not even going to attempt it. Not saying it can't be done or that I'm not capable of figuring out, I'm sure it could be done, I just don't feel it's necessary.

On a side note I have already implemented flying into the gameplay via a monitor powerup.(think knights or Banjo Kazooie or hell mario 64!) It's pretty cool actually and I'm thinking of making sonic shoot flaming rings as projectiles for an attack when he's flying. Of course this will deplete your rings as you shoot them. This will be in the next Youtube video.

Winged Wolf do you know how I can do a 3D loop for my game? More importantly I'm trying to figure out how to get wall bumpers and boost pads in there.

Re: Sonic Xtreme: in 3D by Jeffrey Bones

Wooh, You have some serious learning of 2D and 3D basics ahead of you, not to mention basic maths.
You could do a perfect loop by using Sin and Cos, obviously. Actually GM makes it a bit easier by giving you a "Lengthdir_x / Lengthdir_y" functions, and yes, you can use them in 3d - you can use pretty much anything from 2D  in 3D. Think 2D to 3D as just another axis added to it, and not a completely different kind of programming.

About the level rotations - learn how to use the heck out of "If" and "Else" - you'll need those.. FOREVA!!!
Basically you can make it so that when sonic hits a wall, pressing a specific key would activate another variable, which, would make you go into the "Level Rotation Mode" - When that happens, disable the controls for basic movement and other animations, and then you can start rotating the camera and the gravity direction ( Since Xtreme is block by block, making sonic fall to right or left should be easy enough. ).

Theres just so much to tell, and there are just so many ways to do it.
It's not like: " Go to this event, write this one line, and Violla! It's done! ", it's a lot more complicated than that, and you'll probably have to modify most of the sonic's code, too, because things like this have to be coded differently, if your base code is different.

Re: Sonic Xtreme: in 3D by Jeffrey Bones

about the loops, I thought something like that was possible but I wasn't sure.  Using a model of a 3D loop and then mapping that function to a 2d sonic loop event(or series of events) is most likely what your trying to tell me. I'm sorry it seems like I asked a whole lot more questions than I meant to. I'm not really looking for answers to be given to me like that i was really just asking you to point me in the right direction. Thank you for your help.
Also I'm not sure I explained my idea for the rotating camera correctly. Anyway I'm 99.9% sure I know how to pull that trick off. We will see.

Re: Sonic Xtreme: in 3D by Jeffrey Bones

There will be no more video previews from now on. If I keep showing you the progress you will feel as though you have already played the game when it's finished! So thus I bring you the final video preview via Youtube. I will still post screenshots but from here on no more videos! This final video shows you a near complete Jade Gully with flying added, early work on the Red Sands zone, wall bumpers, and sprite animations for the bosses (made by MugenHunter) Enjoy this video is pretty decent! Look for my beta demo coming soon to this thread!

I've been trying to do what you've done in GM8 for a while would you mind sending me one of the levels in .Game Maker File so I can see how you did it?

Re-Volt, I'm sorry but I do not feel comfortable releasing Sonic Xtreme GM8 in .gmk file of any kind at this time. (NOT EVEN ONE LEVEL) I would be happy to help you with what things I have done that you are curious about, but you should start by being more specific. What things have I done in my project that you are also trying to do?
Winged Wolf released this engine a long time ago and it is available for download but you have to ask him where to get it. His version has only basic elements however as I have made major additions to this thing as you can see from my videos above.
I will release my modified version of the engine for anybody to use, but that won't be exactly the same as my game and that won't happen until after I release the game.

Re: Sonic Xtreme: in 3D by Jeffrey Bones

I am releasing some videos of some work I've been doing all week because I need feedback.
I have came up with 2 different ways to do the invincibility  effect (the one where sonic jumps on the white spinning ball with his face) and I can't decide which one looks better:

(1) The first one, which looks more like a dome------>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyA5426agRA

(2) Or the second which is more close to the real sonic Xtreme--->http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ull2HKxTiUQ

(3) Also I have done some physics work like the homing attack and spin dash. I changed the sparkle effect on the ring when you collect it and I completely remade my springs. Also in this video you get to see the starfox 64 style flying gimmick I have added via the fly monitor. I would like to know what everybody thinks of these changes as well.  LOOK!!!------>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUXTIn2_0bU
