Sonic CD Remix

Update to the Dev Diary,,, smile1
I know this Ugly mess is not worth posting about,, but what the heck,,

The following pics = the Proof of concept, tech demo.
Which demonstrate real-time specular highlights, with specular Bloom, as well as real-time shadows)
The Level chunk (model) is repeated well over 800 times without a hit to the frame rate, (Man! You gata love the power C4 game engine offers)
Frame rate is capped off at a steady 60 FPS, at least on my rig..
Will have to upload some kind of benchmark Demo for you guys to measure performance, and report back.

Notes:
Model is very early and has not been properly UV Mapped yet, thus the starching.
Also the textures are only temporary, Notice the triangle pattern is not actually that found in Palm tree panic.
Palm tree panic's geometry isn't easy to model, lots of odd shapes and contours to work with,
This may take awhile >__<

Re: Sonic CD Remix

Wow! I like it, especially since i never got my PC version of sonic cd to work totally. I didn't get the disc until all of my computers ran on xp or later. Got it working on a sega cd emulator once, right before I crashed my computer and had to reload windows.

I wish I could make stuff like you and xeniczone. I guess I just don't have the attention span to teach myself, but then again I have never learned well on my own. Oh well, I'll work on it.

Re: Sonic CD Remix

thx guys,

@ Modler2
The textures being used there are going to the trash can,
they were kind of just there for a few shader tests so i didn't spend much time on them,
Final textures for that level wont be glossy like that,

@jib9001
Aww its not that hard, to make these sort of things,

As our schedules conflict,,,,I'm going back to the Sonic CD Remix project that I started before project AXSX,

I already have Fireworks 8(which is my favorite image editor) and I'm thinking about upgrading to CS4(just 'cause it's newer)
I have Blender, Game Maker, and Blitz Basic. I just don't know how to use them(I guess that's where the lots of tutorials comes in)

As far as textures go, I think I could to that. I'm like god at using fireworks! I wish I still had some work left over from my web design class I took.
This is some experimental sonic Xtreme covers I made: http://jib9001.deviantart.com/gallery/
I'll try making some textures for you

Lol, school. My college just got out on spring break so I have the next week totally off. Then, since I'm also still in highschool, I'm going to skip a week of college to go to florida on my highschool's spring break with my family. I have to go 'cause my parents say so and I'm 16

Re: Sonic CD Remix

Hey thoes are pretty cool covers, whar'd you get the Robotnic render?
I think in fine on textures over here, I'll be using mudbox, max, and photoshop
to produce textures used for... Diffuse, normal bump, specular, Ambient occlusion and so forth.

I didn't think any one would recognize the robotnik sprite. I got from the only released game to my knowledge to use any sprites or content at all from sonic x-treme.

SONIC'S SCHOOL HOUSE!!!!

It's educational!

I've had that game for 11 years! I used it while I when I was 4 and 5 years old. Robotnik steals any numbers, letters, or pictures that you've collected if he gets you. I was always terrified to go into the room with him.

Btw: I'm sure you're fine on textures, I just want to make some!

Re: Sonic CD Remix

that looks like the tri-force from legend of zelda.
comparison:

What do you think of the textures though?

Re: Sonic CD Remix

Hey......they do seem reminiscent of the Tri-Force from zelda, haha

I want to say sorry i wont be able to use any textures, But I'm grateful that people want to help out.
The texture guidelines for the project are pretty strict,
only because they will be able to age in real-time ( for the time traveling aspect)
they are also very shader oriented textures which consist of multiple layers.

Screen shot with the same textures as the topic starter, just with new lighting and shader edits,( less specular and tryangle patern fixed,)
Also notice the 2 following screens contain aged and non aged variations of the same texture which transition in real time,
This will of course be taken much further, with crumbling bricks, vines that grow, ect ect,
These screens are just of the initial experimental test for game effects and don't represent a finished product,

It's ok I made those for fun. I'll probably use those in my own game once I can figure out how to make one. I was really just seeing how good I could make textures since I've never done it before. I even made them tile, so I'm happy any way.

Hey yeah keep up the good work with them textures, I find them inspirational and a bit fresh,

Man I'm going to have trouble with deciding on which way the grass should be done.

Thanks! I'm new to the textures thing so i don't know if this is how it is normally done but, I just made colored triangles and put half transparent pictures of dirt and stone over top of them.

Edit: I used the rubber stamp tool, and the smudge tool on the edges to make it tile good.

Looking pretty sweet Andrew. Are those shadows realtime or baked into a lightmap?

In C4, what programming languages are supported? just curious.

Hey Defalt!

C++ for C4,
The shadows are realtime shadow maps( blah) I may end up baking the final lightmaps using V-Ray,
or look for a separate lighting engine like this,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1pfCUmEoCs
They only license to AAA game companies thoug,,,
The starting point is $100,000 per game title , believe me i've tried....
I'll Budget a lighting engine for up to around 1000 bucks if i can find a decent one,

A C4 license goes for 350.00 a pop,
Proud owner of a 2 seat license, the other is for Xeniczone when he comes back to the team from his break,
If anyone would like to join up as a programmer, than by all means,

Sonic CD Remix has just restarted not so long ago, Don't have much done as you can see from the early screens above,
(2006 3D studio render From when I first started Sonic CD remix) probably going to remodel that one again from scratch when the time comes,

Re: Sonic CD Remix

An Updated model running in C4.... Cut back on alot of the extruded surface details.
not sure if i like the look, may have plenty more of changes in store,
what do you guys think of the flattened out topography VS the above screens?

(still using the same temporary texture place holder, only frontal UV has been laid out correctly,)
Intended Graphical work-flow as follows,,,
Main level Geometry,
Grass and props,
UV Map unwrap,
Background model,
Texture Creation,
Shader creation,
Lighting setup.
There probably wont be any more screens till there is something worth posting.

I think it looks better than the pictures above. I looks a lot more like a sonic game. I thought the earlier walls had a little bit too much depth.

Re: Sonic CD Remix

Hey, sonic CD's music, I'm at a bit of a loss..
Should i use the original musical score, and have options to change between Japanese and English versions?
What I'm really hoping to gather are are some remixed versions.
Hope everyone will keep there eyes open for some sonic CD remixes.

Official remixes of the Japanese tracks, ( there seem to only be 8 tracks)
