is the Sega CD worth getting?

Well I been thinking about getting one of these add-ons for the Genesis since I want to collect some of the Sega stuff for the Genesis and I wanted ask about the Sega CD I mean I know it was a failure back then but it has some good games Besides Sonic CD and I do not want to play the FMV games but anyway is it worth getting or should I just not get it and just use the emulator? [which I do use]

Emulators are for poor people, buy the actual accessory, the real thing is much better than a crappy emulator.

I second Saturn's opinion.

Why not get one and have a part of your collection which will mean something rather than just loading up a ROM in emulator that will mean nothing once you
A。Get bored with it.

I don't think emulating Genesis/32x/SegaCD is so illegal. I mean, Sega doesn't even sell those consoles anymore.
For poor people emulator works, i could buy both Genesis and Sega CD, but the only real problem is, it's nearly impossible for people like me ( for example ) to get those, because:
1.) The original Genesis,32x and Sega CD wasn't very popular in our country as the crappy clones ware, that didn't quiet work so well.
so you rarely can find a Genesis, that isn't a clone in my country.
2.) I could by it on Ebay, or something like that, but i can't shop on internet.. yet.

Some emulators work well, Fusion/Gens for example, they barely have any problems ( at least i haven't came across any ), so i can't see a problem with them, but yeah, the real thing IS better.

That's What I'm doing now since that I been getting so much Systems [well not alot but you know what I mean] I decided to start a collection but I just wanted to ask about the Sega CD I mean it can't be that bad.

I've been wanting to buy a Sega CD off ebay for like 2 months now. I've lost 10 auctions trying to get my hands on one. It seems a lot of people are wanting the Sega CD add on because this add on is selling for over $100 dollars in some auctions.

Re: is the Sega CD worth getting?

SegaCDs in any country are particularly rare.  The Model 2 is a little easier to come by, but if your like me and have a model one Genesis, I want the Model 1 CD.  Which is much more rare and expensive.  I've put aside 65 bucks to buy one but it's still hard to find one that cheap.

What you can do is buy Sega CD games and run them on an emulator. This way you can avoid anything illegal.  Even though Sega doesn't sell the Sega Gen/32X/CD they still own the rights to them.

As far as games go, Sol-Feace, Snatcher, Sonic CD (of course), Dragon's Lair... Just of the top of my head. Good luck getting Snatcher though. The Sega CD is the only English Version. So it's rare and valuable.  If you liked Metal Gear Solid on Playstation you will like Snatcher.

Though when I do get one I'm going to have one hell of a tower.  Sega CD, Genesis, and a 32X all stacked on top of each other... I can't wait.

EDIT:  Wouldn't it be fun to stack everything you can on top of that poor little Genesis.  A 32X, follow by, X-Band, Game-Genie, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 3.

okay yes that's a good suggestion but I'm not sure about that I mean what if my laptop is being repaired or something like that and it takes a while for it to be repaired? I won't be able to even play the games.

Re: is the Sega CD worth getting?

At the time it was novel, but still not very popular.  The Sega CD was released for 300 US dollars in 1992.  This was a time when Audio CD Players cost 250 - 700 dollars, and CD recorders cost 20,000 dollars. Though in 1993 the Model 2 CD came out and cost 230 dollars. So the model 1 only had a 1 year run if even that.  Which is probably why it is so rare.

As far as is it worth getting though.  Do you like FMV Games because almost all the games on Sega CD are this way.  I think a major selling point is Snatcher and Sonic CD but other then that, if you don't like FMV games don't get it.  I personally don't like them but I still want the console just for collectors purposes and those 2 specific games.

Yeah, but it just doesn't feel the same like it does playing on the actual thing..

Re: is the Sega CD worth getting?

Emulating the hardware isn't illegal. Using downloaded copies of the games is :P but emulators can use the real CDs so that's a moot point as you can just use the original copies. But no emulator has a built-in BIOS so that is also a moot point as you need an illegal copy of a BIOS :| (no, having the console doesn't make a downloaded copy legal, the back-up exception doesn't apply on ROM media, only magnetic media and similar)

Back on-topic: yes, it is worth getting a Sega CD.

Re: is the Sega CD worth getting?

@Saturn:That is Very true. if I just buy Sega CD games and play them on the emulator it won't feel like I'm actually playing the Sega CD it'll just feel like I'm just playing this collection game that just includes some of the games.

@Xeniczone:no I do not like the FMV games but I found some games that I want to get like Popful mail, some of the Rerelease genesis games on the Sega CD,and some other games that I don't remember the title and I also like that you can play fan games on the Sega CD such as Sonic 1 megamix. And Sonic CD well I don't think I'll get that game since the fact that I already have it on the gamecube and I play the JP version on the emulator.

Sik:I see Thanks for telling me. ^^ And I saw the links you posted and you didn't need to post Sonic CD because I already know that it is good and I play the game Already XD But the other games you show me I knew there were more good ones then the ones that I was talking about I'll add those to my collection games.

If you can understand Japanese the list is much bigger. Japan got all the good games ._.

Re: is the Sega CD worth getting?

If you like playing Japanese games their is one of 2 things you can do.

First is buy the game and rip the iso.  Then you need to change the header of the game so that it boots as an American game. Burn it to a cd and your good to go.

The second thing you can do is build a multibios.  This is very technical but you can get the EPROM Memory chip and using a chip programmer put multiple bios on the same Sega CD.  Changeable by switch. So you set the switch and boot the Sega CD and it will boot in to the bios that you choose using the switch.

I almost did something like this.  There was a Jap Model 1 Sega CD on ebay not too long ago that was broken (With the common rattle where the back of the plastic CD drive breaks off on the inside. Easy Fix.) and came with the original box.  So i put a bid on it and waited.  The idea was, I would win it, fix it, and then change the bios on it to an American bios. So it would basically be a American Mega CD tongue1.  But I lost the bid by 10 bucks :\

Because Well I was talking to martianman and he told me that his Sega CD was smoking when he was running it and it got on fire and he said that two of his friends had the same problem and I wanted to ask about this.

What? Those are the first cases I hear of Sega CDs turning on fire o_O

I know that there are a lot of broken Sega CDs, but most of the time it's just that the lens needs cleaning or something like that (easily fixable stuff, bah).
